The Organisation

PCMA South Africa was formed in 1997. The structure of the organization has changed significantly since its inception and now provides an association for healthcare pharmacists and related healthcare professionals.

PCMA (SA) is a section 21 company without share capital.  There are two types of membership:

  • Corporate members
  • Individual members

The right to vote and serve on the executive committee is reserved for healthcare pharmacists and other professionals. Corporate members are encouraged to attend at least four ExCo meetings during the year.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PCMA
  • Promotion of standards of excellence in therapeutic outcomes in a managed care environment.
  • Provision of a forum for those stakeholders in heathcare, who have an interest in clinical outcomes and pharmacoeconomics.
  • Facilitating Continuing Professional Education (CPE) in managed care.
  • Improvement of the understanding by providers and consumers of managed care principles.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

The role of the healthcare provider is moving towards patient-orientated services, which form an integral part of managed care.  In order to meet these new challenges, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals, in all facets of the industry, will need to acquire new skills to develop certain capabilities. The Continuing Professional Education (CPE) program covers clinical conditions, pharmacoeconomics and “hot topic” industry issues with a strong focus on evidenced based medicine and managed care principles.

The PCMA has a working relationship with the Department of Health and a number of academics. Throughout the year the association co-hosts seminars and workshops in related subjects. Certificates of attendance/competence are issued appropriately.Other healthcare professionals join these CPE meetings to maximise the opportunity of:  “reading off the same page” with the ultimate aim of patient care in health care delivery.
The PCMA has formed a commitment with the Department of Health to develop Public / Private Relationships which are forged in the education arena. Seminars in Health Economics are hosted in collaboration annually
