The PCMA Code of Practice is binding for its Individual Members as Healthcare Professionals and Corporate Members as healthcare providers in South Africa.
PCMA members shall:
- Comply with all State, Provincial and Pharmacy Council laws pertaining to pharmacy registration, licensing, provision of healthcare and distribution of medicine.
- Strive for standards of excellence in the practice of pharmacy in a managed care environment.
- Abide by the constitution and uphold the goals and objectives of the PCMA
- Represent and promote the interests of managed care pharmacists and other managed care practitioners
- Act in such a manner that would not bring the name or reputation of PCMA or Pharmaceutical managed care into disrepute
- Participate, on a regular basis, in continuing pharmaceutical education programmes and events
- Where continuing pharmaceutical education events are sponsored the marketing of specific drug therapies will not take place
- Promotional material to be made available outside the meeting room.
- Promote, educate and disseminate the principles, policies and benefits of pharmaceutical managed care to the public
- Ensure that clinical and healthcare related decisions are made based on the most current, clinically and scientifically validated information available, using evidence-based medicine wherever possible
- Commit to ensuring that the benefits of utilizing pharmaceutical managed care principles are passed onto the patient, wherever possible
- Collaborate and co-operate with other healthcare providers (e.g. doctors; nurses) to ensure that drug therapy use is safe, rational, appropriate and cost effective and that the patient’s healthcare needs are met.
