The overall aim of the course is to develop the participants' knowledge and skills in evidence-based medicine that could provide an aid to formulary and purchasing decisions for medicines and devices. Participants will be introduced to the principles and methods of evaluating evidence, and will be assisted in developing skills in the application of these principles in the process of therapeutic selection. Emphasis will be placed on learning by case study analysis and problem solving
- To gain an appreciation of the utility of an evidence-based approach to economic evaluation.
- To develop practical skills in the critical appraisal of clinical trials and economic evaluations of pharmaceuticals and other therapeutic interventions
- To provide a conceptual and analytical framework (both economic and clinical) in which therapeutic selection problems can be analysed
- To perform a basic pharmacoeconomic evaluation.
- To perform a basic assessment of the quality of clinical trial data.
and will be given different tasks in the therapeutic selection process. The groups will be required to make decisions based on the effectiveness, safety and cost of therapeutics.
